What's it like to be bilingual in the United States?
Being bilingual is advantageous when living in the U.S., it is advantageous in any country but it is exceptionally beneficial in the United States considering it is a county with a rich immigration history. People from all over the world from all different cultures and practices immigrate here to the United States -- they have for centuries. Such a vast variety of people live in the U.S. that there is no official language in the U.S.. Being bilingual in the U.S. opens many more opportunities for one. For example a job opening might prefer you to be bilingual because they may have a large variety of people from different ethnicity that may only understand one language.

According to "Mother Tongue," what has it been like for Amy Tan to be bilingual in the U.S.? Summarize t least two of the stories she told to illustrate her experience of being bilingual. How would Tan describe the experience of being bilingual in the United States?
Daily journal #3
What does Amy Tan mean when she claims that she uses “all the Englishes [she] grew up with” (par. 2)? Do you agree with Tan’s implied argument that we should use all our Englishes and use them proudly? Explain.
I believe Amy Tam means that she knows the time and place to use "all the Englishes" she knows. For example she won't be using the English she uses at her speeches with her mother. With her mother she would use a much less formal form of English because they are comfortable with one another. The same way goes with a higher up, you won't see me talking to a teacher the way I would with my best friend.

Keeping in mind the essay prompt that you will be answering at the end of this unit, what ideas from Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” do you think might be useful in helping you write that essay? Describe in detail how you might use evidence from “Mother Tongue” to answer the prompt.
Amy Tan's mother is a great example to use as someone who's bilingual disability has impaired her quality of life here in the United States. In her case, she has trouble speaking English making her not bilingual. Not being bilingual has damaged the way people view her. For example some see her as inferior because she can not speak English, not necessarily becasue she isn't bilingual. If she were bilingual she wouldn't have to face this problem.

Describe in detail what Dumas’ use of the name “Julie” did for her experience in the U.S. (Think about those “X-ray glasses” of hers.)
Share your thoughts on her use of the name “Julie” and the interactions she had while using that name.
When Dumas changed her name to "Julie" she was more widely accepted by the people here in the U.S.. They no longer took her name into consideration when deducing what kind of person she is. This also allowed Dumas to see many of her "friends" for who they really were. For example, because they did not know Dumas was really Iranian they spoke freely and badly of Iranians.

I have had trouble completing my rough draft. I know exactly what I want to write about and have jotted down an outline of sorts, but I simply need a bit more time to turns those ideas into writing. They are very simple fixes like gathering text quotes to support my ideas and stuff of that nature. “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.” — Elie Wiesel
- Do you agree or disagree with the Elie Wiesel quote? Why?
- How does this image inform your agreement or disagreement?
I agree and disagree with Eli Wiesel's quote because I do agree that Neutrality helps the oppressor and never the victim but taking a side doesn't necessarily make the situation better, it may even make it worse. What the quote is saying is not take the side of the oppressed it plainly states to take a side, that could also mean to take the oppressors side. Of course you can also take the oppressors side and help better the situation, but that may lead to your own demise as well. Take the Civil Rights movement as an example. If you take the side of the oppressor you are only adding to the problem, but if you take the side of the Victim you risk become a victim yourself. I say this because many who tried to help African Americans gain their rights were beaten and even killed because they tried to help -- they themselves became the victim.

Once we got back down, we decided to swim under the waterfall. It was one of the greatest adventures we ever had together.

One of the challenges that community colleges face is keeping students engaged and retained. Many students attend school part time and have families, jobs, and outside responsibilities and don’t have time to participate in student activities and clubs. Therefore, commuter colleges have to work very hard to attract the students' attention and get them involved. For instance, the student senates' and Phi Theta Kappa's activities are posted on bulletin boards across campus in the hopes of attracting members. At Delaware Tech, the student service's center houses many of the departments that students need, such as registration, admissions, financial aid, and career counseling. Also, some colleges form special departments, such as The Roady Center, to address students’ needs. The Roady Center's hours are designed to accommodate students, and it’s designed to assist students from admission to graduation.

It's hard to understand why people decide to buy certain cars. Even though a person's old car might be running fine, once he sees one of the new models, he's not going to be happy until he has traded in his old car. John, one of my best friends, is a good example of a victim of “new car fever.” John's 1993 Camaro was running fine, but when he saw the advertisements for the 1996 Camaro, with more valves for extra fuel injection and a sleek, sporty new air foil, he thought of thousands of reasons why he needed a new car. John's girlfriend didn’t see much of him for several Saturdays while he was listening to this salesman's sales pitch and looking at that dealer's display. Meanwhile, his girlfriend had started going out with an old friend of hers and John's. She says she doesn’t mind going out in her new boyfriends 1968 pickup at all. Now John's got a new car, but is looking for a new girl to go out with, preferably one who will be impressed with his new car's extra valves.

- What were the best TED Talk rehearsals you saw during class yesterday?
- Based on the best of those rehearsals, what recommendations might you make to your classmates as they work to refine their speeches?
Daily Journal #57
As you prepare to present your TED Talk for the class next week, what is your biggest concern?
What are you doing to overcome this concern?
I would say I am prepared mentally but I still need to plan out my speech. I need to figure out a way where I can present all the information I want to while at the same time having it flow smoothly. In order overcome this concern I am writing a vast amount of outlines and practicing them to make sure that I found the right one.
